Itinerary

📍 Destination: Lake Baringo, Kenya

Ideal for: Bird watchers, nature lovers, culture seekers, and anyone craving serenity with a splash of adventure
Best time to visit: All year round (especially October–April for migratory birds)

đź—“ Day 1: Arrival + Sunset Boat Safari + Stargazing

Morning

  • Arrive at Lake Baringo by mid-morning (drive from Nairobi is ~5.5 hours, or fly to nearby airstrips if preferred).
  • Check into your lodge or camp (e.g. Soi Safari Lodge, Tumbili Cliff Lodge, or Roberts’ Camp).
  • Settle in with a welcome drink and relax by the lake with views of hippos and fish eagles.

Afternoon

  • Sunset Boat Safari on Lake Baringo (highly recommended!)
    • Spot hippos, crocodiles, and over 470 bird species including fish eagles, herons, kingfishers, and flamingos (especially during high water levels).
    • Watch the local guide feed a fish to a swooping African Fish Eagle — a classic Lake Baringo moment!

Evening

  • Enjoy a peaceful dinner at the lodge with lake views.
  • Optional: Stargazing session – Lake Baringo has minimal light pollution, perfect for Milky Way viewing!

đź—“ Day 2: Nature Walks, Hot Springs, Culture + Raptor Feeding

Early Morning

  • Guided nature walk on the shores or nearby cliffs (early birds get the best birds!).
    • Great chance to spot Verreaux’s eagle, Hemprich’s hornbill, and more.

Mid-Morning

  • Visit Lake Bogoria Hot Springs (1-hour drive away)
    • Famous for dramatic geysers and steaming pools — a natural spa feel!
    • Bonus: See thousands of lesser flamingos on Lake Bogoria.

Afternoon

  • Return to Baringo for lunch and a break.

Late Afternoon

  • Raptor feeding experience (available at some lodges)
    • Watch eagles, owls, and other birds of prey feed up close.

Optional Activity

  • Visit to a local Njemps or Pokot village
    • Learn about traditional fishing methods, culture, and way of life. The Njemps are unique as they fish on a freshwater lake, unlike most pastoralist communities.

Evening

  • Enjoy dinner with a campfire by the lake.

đź—“ Day 3: Island Excursion + Departure

Morning

  • Island boat tour – Explore Ol Kokwe Island, the largest on the lake.
    • Visit the hot springs, interact with the local community, and learn about geothermal activity.
    • Some parts have volcanic fumaroles — very cool (and hot) geology!

Late Morning

  • Head back to camp, pack up, and check out.

Afternoon

  • Begin return journey or continue on to your next destination (e.g. Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru, or even Samburu or Laikipia).

âś… Optional Add-ons

  • Fishing excursion (tilapia & catfish are common here)
  • Day trip to Lake 94 and Kapedo hot springs (longer excursions)
  • Birding checklist challenge with a local guide

🎒 What to Bring

  • Binoculars (absolute must for birders)
  • Sunscreen & hat (Baringo is hot and sunny year-round)
  • Swimwear if your lodge has a pool
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Light clothes + one warm layer for evenings
